Make an anniversary website for your partner
An anniversary is the one date a year when the whole story is the point. Not one photo, not one line, but all of it: how you met, the first trip, the apartment with the broken radiator, the day you knew. An anniversary website gives that story a shape you can hand over in a single link.

Start with the story page, not the photos
On an anniversary the order matters, so write the story before you choose a single picture. One short paragraph on how it started, then the three or four moments you keep telling people about: the first trip, the move, the hard month you got through, this year. Doing this first does two useful things. It tells you which photos belong on the film strips and which one deserves the full-page spread. And it shows you what the letter needs to say, because the moments you keep coming back to while you type are the letter. Give them real details: the name of the cafe, what the weather was doing, the thing they said.
Let the cover and the back cover carry the year
The cover holds both your names and a photo, and the back cover is where the magazine says something like 'Happy 2 years'. Together they are the bookends, so spend a minute on them. Pick a cover photo where you both look like yourselves rather than the one where you look best. A candid beats a posed shot, and a photo from this year says more than one from the first date. Everything in between can be as full or as light as you like, since the magazine is up to ten pages and you do not have to fill all of them.
Make the letter about this year
The most common mistake in an anniversary letter is trying to summarize the entire relationship. The story page has already done that job. Make the letter about the last twelve months instead: what changed, one thing you noticed about them that they probably did not notice about themselves, one thing you want for the year ahead. That is 150 to 250 words, which is the right length for a phone screen. The letter gets a page of its own, so nothing competes with it. Break it into short paragraphs and write it like a text you would send, only slower. Read it out loud once. Cut anything you would not say to their face.
Pick the style that matches the mood
The magazine comes in three styles. Cherry is warm red and cream, the most romantic and the safest choice for an anniversary. Noir is black and white with sharp type, good for a partner who likes a little drama. Blush is soft pink and gentle, closer to a keepsake. Choose by who they are, not by who you are. You can switch style at any point while you build, and your words and photos carry over, so try all three and keep the one that made you smile. Send it first thing, and leave room for the reply
Preview it on your own phone, publish, and text the link just after midnight or before they wake up, with one line like 'I made you something'. You get an email the moment it is opened. The last page is a reply box, which gives them somewhere to put the reaction that is not a two-word text, and you get another email when they use it. If your partner is a morning person, send it at six. The point is that it is waiting before the day has properly started, not the exact hour.
