What goes on a page for her

The Magazine is about ten pages. There is a cover with both your names and a photo, then your letter on its own page, a page for your story, nine reasons on hearts that flip over, photo pages, your songs on a spinning vinyl, a big line across a full-page photo, and a back cover. You do not have to fill every page. A cover, a letter and a few photos already make a gift. The more specific you are, the more it reads as hers: a cafe's real name beats 'a lovely place'.

Pick the style by her taste, not yours

There are three styles. Cherry is warm red and cream: the romantic one, and the safe default. Blush is soft pink and gentle, closer to a keepsake, good for a girlfriend who likes things quiet. Noir is black and white with sharp type, for the girlfriend who thinks pink is trying too hard. Think about what she wears, what her room looks like, which one she would screenshot. You can switch at any point while you build and your words and photos carry over, so try all three.

Photos: strips, film and one big line

You can add up to twenty photos, and they are spread across the magazine rather than dumped in a gallery. Some go on a photobooth strip, some on film strips, and one gets a full page with a single line across it. Use that line for the sentence you would say if you were not nervous: 'I would pick you again'. Scroll back through your camera roll for the in-between photos, not the posed ones. The unplanned ones are the ones she will look at twice.

The letter, and the reply

The letter has a page of its own, so nothing competes with it. Write it like a text you would send on a good day: one thing she did that you keep thinking about, one thing you are looking forward to, one line only she would understand. Between 150 and 300 words, in short paragraphs. At the end of the magazine is a reply box. It is the part people underrate: she gets somewhere to answer in her own words, and you get an email with what she said.
