A Christmas gift for a long distance relationship that opens at midnight

Christmas is the hardest day to be apart. Everyone else is in the same room, and you are a time zone away with a parcel that may or may not clear customs by the 24th. A gift that arrives as a link has one big advantage over a box: it gets there on time, every time, and it can be waiting for them the second the day starts.

On Longlove the design made for this is Under the Same Sky. They open a night sky where your city and theirs light up and a line of light joins them while the miles count up. Below it are your photos pinned on an old star map, a jar of paper stars with a reason in each, a letter in a midnight envelope, and under the letter, your own voice saying it.

Why a page works when a parcel might not

International post in December is a gamble: late, held at customs, or delivered to a neighbour. A page has none of that. You make it once, it lives at a private link, and it opens on any phone without an app or an account. It also does something a parcel cannot: you get an email the moment they open it, so even from another country you know exactly when it landed. If they write back in the reply box at the end, you get that by email too.

Make it open at midnight on Christmas Day

Once you send it, you can choose the moment it opens. Until then the link shows a short countdown instead of the page, so you can send it early in the week and it stays a surprise. Set the time as it is where you are. If they are in another time zone, work out their midnight first: for a partner seven hours ahead, their midnight is 5pm the day before for you. Then text the link with one line, something like 'don't open it yet', and let the countdown do the rest.

Record thirty seconds of your voice

Being apart at Christmas mostly means not hearing each other in the same room. Under the letter there is a play button with your voice on it: up to thirty seconds, recorded right in the editor or uploaded as a voice memo. Do not read the letter out loud, it is already on the page. Say the thing you would say if you were there when they woke up. Thirty seconds is about seventy words, which is plenty. You get an email the first time they press play.

Fill the star map with this year

The star map holds up to six photos, so choose them from this year rather than from the beginning: the last visit, a screenshot of a late call, the airport. A few handwritten words under each photo help, like 'the train in March'. Then put a reason in each paper star in the jar. Christmas lists of reasons tend to drift into the general, so keep them specific to the two of you: the playlist they made for your flight, how they stay up for your time zone.

If you are flying to see them instead

If you will be together for the holidays and the gift is the trip itself, The Ticket fits better. They tear open a boarding pass with both your names, a little plane flies from your city to theirs, and a countdown ticks to the minute you land. Both designs have a letter, photos and room for your voice, and you can switch between them while you build without losing your words.
